British Sikh woman Preet Chandi makes history with solo trip to South Pole in 40 days
On January 3, Preet Chandi made history after being the first woman of colour to reach the South Pole without a proper contingent.
Preet Chandi completed the tedious expedition of 1120 Km in 40 days to the South Pole.
British born Sikh woman Harpreet Chandi etched her name on the pages of history after she completed the tedious Antarctic expedition in 40 days. Harpreet, also known as Preet, is the clinical training officer of the British Army and is also entrusted with the duty of organising and validating training for medics in the Army. Preet completed the solo expedition after covering over 1120 Km to the South Pole. She kept her followers updated with audio blogs throughout her journey.
On January 3, Preet made history after being the first woman of colour to reach the South Pole without a proper contingent. She took to Instagram to share the story of her success.
“Hello everyone, checking in from day 40. I made it to the South Pole where it’s snowing. Feeling so many emotions right now. I knew nothing about the polar world three years ago and it feels so surreal to finally be here. It was tough getting here and I want to thank everybody for their support. This expedition was always about so much more than me. I want to encourage people to push their boundaries and to believe in themselves, and I want you to be able to do it without being labelled a rebel. I have been told no on many occasions and told to ‘just do the normal thing’, but we create our own normal. You are capable of anything you want. No matter where you are from or where your start line is, everybody starts somewhere. I don’t want to just break the glass ceiling, I want to smash it into a million pieces. Who’s with me?” Preet captioned the post.

According to Harpreet’s personal website, she is nicknamed Polar Preet and has completed a solo, unsupported expedition to the South Pole. It involved her travelling 700 miles (1120 Km approx), pulling a pulk (sledge) with all of the kit, battling temperatures of up to -50c and wind speeds of up to 60mph. She is also an Ultra-Marathon runner and an endurance athlete.
